The redesigned 2014 Civic was the only small car to score maximum ratings for both its 2-door and 4-door models in stringent front-end crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Twelve compact and subcompact cars including the Honda Civic, Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Kia Soul were included in the "small overlap" crash test, which replicates an accident in which the front corner of a car clips another car, a pole or a tree at 40 mph. In all, half of the dozen cars tested by the IIHS fared poorly, but six performed well with the Honda Civic cinching top ratings and being named the ‘Top Safety Pick +’ .
In the case of the Honda Civic, the IIHS said "dummy movement during the test was well-controlled and both cars had only minimal intrusion into the occupant compartment, so survival space for the dummy was well-maintained."
Safety is critical in the fast-growing small-car market with many buyers downsizing from larger vehicles in favour of the compact car’s impressive gas mileage.
The Honda Civic has earned consecutive safety awards with its 2013 four-door model nabbing the highest five-star rating in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the two-door earning four out of five stars.
ATL Automotive is the exclusive dealership for Honda in Jamaica and in addition to the award winning Civic also carries the Accord, City, Fit and CRV models.
Tyres are an integral part of your overall safety on the road. Worn out tyres slip a lot more easily on wet roads and reduce handling and stopping power. With that in mind, it’s important to inspect your tyres at least once a week for signs of damage or wear.
Gas will evaporate from your car’s gas tank if it has an escape. Loose, missing or damaged gas caps cause 147 million gallons of gas to evaporate each year, according to the Car Care Council. So be sure to tighten that gas cap each time you fuel up your car.
NEVER drive with the oil light on or flashing, quickly pull over and turn off the engine. Checking the oil level will tell you whether you have a low oil situation or an internal oil pressure problem.
Have your car-care expert perform preventive maintenance services on a regular basis, such as topping off fluid levels, inspecting belts and hoses, checking tire pressure and the engine oil, and making sure all lights are working properly.
Never ignore strange noises. If you drive the car most of the time, and you hear a noise that was not there the last time you drove the car, and it does not sound like it is going away any time soon, contact your dealer immediately for an inspection. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
